There are 4 ways players can get a Personal Union in EU4: Nevertheless, EU4 fans will be able to integrate (annex) the lesser part of the Personal Union only after 50 years of vassalage. Players can use all the normal subject interactions (found in the Subject tab) that they use with vassals with the junior partner as well. Also, the senior partner will not receive any taxes from their “vassal”, but, other than that, they work in every way as a normal vassal. Those are gained before the union though. Something unique for Personal Unions is that the junior partner of the union can also have its own vassals. If it wasn’t obvious, Sunni, Hindu, Confucian, and any other non-Christian countries can’t use the EU4 Personal Union mechanic, even though they have access to royal marriages. Players can also gain a union with a country if they gave a claim to the throne. Usually, Personal Unions in EU4 trigger when a kingdom’s monarch dies without an heir, while also being in a royal marriage. This technique can be used to conquer huge amounts of land without the usual repercussions. Personal Unions are a very powerful mechanic that can help Christian nations rule over other big countries as if they were vassals. Note that Disloyal attitude disloyal or Rebellious attitude rebellious subjects can accept support independence offers from other countries (typically the player's enemies), which will increase their liberty desire significantly and cause them to declare a war for their independence, where the goal is for the attacker to defend its capital.Succession and Personal Union Through War How Personal Unions Work in EU4 Once the player has a high enough development and strong enough army versus their personal union subject, they will never declare independence on their own, even at high liberty desire. If their liberty desire remains low, then they will never declare independence. A junior partner can also declare war on their senior partner at any time - even while the nations are in a war together - to gain their independence. ![]() The senior partner will get a "Restoration of Union" casus belli. ![]() If the senior partner's ruler dies while the junior partner has a negative opinion of its overlord, the junior partner will become an independent nation again and be assigned a new ruler of the same dynasty. If it's over 50 there's also the possibility one of your rivals/enemies "support independence" of them, increasing their liberty desire higher, you'll get a notification for that and their supporter will join them in their independence war.
